A to Z Challenge 2019

“B” is for Barcelona

This is my entry for “B” for the A to Z Challenge.

There are places you visit which make you so comfortable that you can live there. America does that for me. Thus, although I only do the touristy stuff in the States as I do not live there, it (my dream future home) cannot be my favorite touristy place.

As a tourist, my favorite city is Barcelona. Barcelona is such a favorite that I think Spain is my favorite destination country, especially considering my intention to visit Madrid and other places in Spain. However, apart from the most pleasant travel experience I had in Barcelona in 2009, there are no specifics I can pinpoint why I love the place. If I could, I would go there every summer even for just a week. It has been almost ten years ago since I was there so it is definitely time to go back.

Could it be because I was born with a Spanish surname (Aguilar)? Spain colonized the Philippines for more than 300 years. Until the 80s, Spanish was a language Filipinos learned at school, as far as I know. I could be mistaken. My timing could be off. I am so very slowly learning Spanish.

Showing you the pictures from my trip might help us to figure out why I love Barcelona. I must say though that if you want to do the touristy thing, I think Barcelona is the perfect place. I find that the city has so much beauty. I enjoyed the simple activity of walking near we were staying. We also got lucky with our hotel as it was conveniently situated near the transport system and some nice places, and the cost was reasonable, too.

Then, there is the comida (Spanish word for food). I love, love, love Spanish food. It may not be for everybody but it’s unquestionably my favorite. My friend and I had satisfied tummies while we were there. I was probably a pig, actually.

I don’t know if it were the smiling friendly locals, or the place itself, but I was comfortable enough to exlore on my own. We had a day when my friend went on her own quest and I checked out Las Ramblas alone. I didn’t even mind getting totally lost as I ventured further out to the marina. My eyes got to feast on the beauty over and over. It was dark by the time I found the Cathedral, and later my friend. It was a pity I was left with a mobile phone for taking pictures. My camera battery gave up on me. Thus, I have a reason to go back: I need to take better pictures.

As a Catholic, my bigger excuse is to visit Sagrada Familia again. It might still be incomplete when I go back but that’s not an issue. I will just have to go back again when it is fully completed. As it is, it is a huge tourist attraction in Barcelona, and understandably so.

Another must-visit while in Barcelona is Park Güell. Despite it being late-ish in the afternoon already, I was so pleased we went that I didn’t even complain about how exhausted I was from all the walking… although I think we ended up taking the cab on our way back.

Believe me, Barcelona is where you want to go to do the touristy thing. It is my favorite destination, for sure. I was such a jolly tourist in Barcelona.

So, if you haven’t yet, heaad out to Europe this summer. Visit my favorite Barcelona. The weather there is awesome, too.

  1. Barcelona looks like a very beautiful place.

My sole familiarity with Barcelona was an old comedy movie with Peter Sellers called The Girl From Barcelona.

Sellers played a matador who did something to tick the girl from Barcelona off so she took a rifle and forced him to lie in a hot bath of water filled with blue dye that turned him blue.

So he became known as the Blue Matador.

    1. Barcelona is beautiful. It is warm, people and weather I’m summer. I wonder how it is in winter… hmm…

Is it a comedy? With the Spanish passion, it sounds about right. Hehe. Hubby thinks he’s funny. He had these two movies and he wanted me to watch them but they weren’t for me. 😊

    1. Hi Eli. Thanks so much for the comment. It’s always great to hear from fellow bloggers. I’ve got you on Twitter, too. 🙂 I like California but it isn’t hubby’s favorite. At least we agree on New York. We were there in December and we went to New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando. I got to see a bit of Sacramento, Napa, and San Francisco last time three years ago. We hope to visit more. What are your favorite places?

      1. Glad to have found you! Look forward to reading more of you. I want to see more of California, for sure. And I’ve never been to New York City.

Some of my favorites: Boston, Charleston, S.C., Atlanta, Miami.

      2. Same here. 🙂 Thank you, Eli.

Coincidentally, “C” is for California! I am still behind in the challenge. I had hoped to catch up this weekend but I underestimated my prep time. At least, I have all images ready to “G”. I just need to write the post. I’m doing the challenge with both my blogs.

We’ve only been to Orlando. Next time, we will visit Miami. We also only made it to the airport of Atlanta. 🙂 There is so much to see, really.

I am hoping to do some reading soon. I am curious to see/read the different takes on the challenge.
